Climate Assessment for Data Consultant: Project Brief

This project is working in partnership with Lawrenceville United to collect data via survey from staff, the board of directors, and Lawrenceville residents. Lawrenceville United is based in Pittsburgh, PA, and is an inclusive, resident-driven, non-profit organization that works to improve the quality of life for all Lawrenceville residents. The company's core values include community engagement, equity, integrity, diversity and inclusion, and sustainability. Through this mission and values, Lawrenceville United envisions a welcoming, diverse, and empowered community that works together to ensure all residents have what they need to thrive. More about Lawrenceville United and its values can be found on their website: http://www.lunited.org.

This project is to design a climate assessment, and collect, and present data from staff, board of directors, and Lawrenceville residents on experiences of anti-oppression and bias. The distribution of the data collection is up to Lawrenceville United. Any distribution will attribute credit by name to the Consultant hired.

This project is subcontracted through Just Collaboration, who has been hired to provide anti-oppression consulting to Lawrenceville United’s staff and board of directors. Just Collaboration is a Black, and woman-founded consulting firm that uses an applied theatre praxis coupled with an anti-oppressive approach to deepen the work of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in organizations. Mary C. Parker (she/her), Just Collaboration Founder, and Principal Consultant will be the Main Liaison for this subcontract and Lead Contact for this Request for Proposal. More about Mary and Just Collaboration can be found here: http://www.justcollaboration.org.

The all-inclusive budget for this project is $1,500.

Project Goals

Lawrenceville United is seeking a deeper understanding of the experience of its staff, board of directors, and Lawrenceville residents. To meet this objective, the Consultant should:

Provide an evaluation component to measure the impact of anti-oppression training for staff and board of directors

Collect results using via a method of data collection designed by the Consultant to define a baseline of what is going on within Lawrenceville United and the Lawrenceville community

Share results of findings outlining themes and key insights from data as a blueprint for change

Scope of Work

Scope 1: Design Data Collection

The first phase of work will include designing a data collective process where Lawrenceville residents, Lawrenceville United staff, and the board of directors can share experiences and the impact of oppression and bias. The Consultant will work in collaboration with Just Collaboration and Lawrenceville United to finalize the collection process.

Scope 2: Administer Data Collection

A data collective process will be administered to approximately 250-400 people. The method of data collection should be accessible for virtual and in-person collection. The collection of data (virtual and in-person) should be stored electronically to transfer to Lawrenceville United.

Scope 3: Prepare Results to Share with the Client

The results of the data collection process should be in a shareable format for the client including the raw data. Results should include and are not limited to a report that highlights themes and trends from the results and any other relevant findings. The Consultant will hold a meeting to share the report and relevant findings.

Current Roadblocks and Barriers to Success

Below are some potential technical issues or possible roadblocks

  • 7 staff, 15 board of directors, and approximately 250 residents are expected to participate in the data collection process. Ideally, we would want 100% participation from staff and the board of directors. We strive to achieve at least 250 resident responses and recognize the number may be higher than that depending on the success of the outreach

  • If survey methods are used as a data collection process it is imperative to account for accessibility in retrieving the data in this way. It is requested to have electronic and paper surveys. The method of survey delivery is challenging in that some residents may have limited access to an electronic device to complete the survey or none which will require a paper survey. That will then need to be manually entered electronically with the other results.

  • The duration of this project is short. There is an expectation for a quick turnaround due to the ongoing delivery of the training and the opportunity to incorporate the data results into the training that ends in November.

Evaluation Metrics and Criteria

  • Experience in executing comprehensive assessments of what interaction looks like among employees, board, and community

  • Ability to offer specific themes and insights from data based on results

  • Prefer BIPOC and women-owned businesses

  • Prefer Pittsburgh-based firms

  • Commitment to flexibility and adjusting process in response to feedback

  • Understanding the needs of the Lawrenceville community and/or dynamics of rapidly changing, gentrifying neighborhoods
